In Vaarta – Strategy, Solutions and Communication Design
Who we are? In Vaarta is about conversations – about listening, learning and ultimately creating conversations that help us move forward, sustainably. We do this through creating frameworks of solution, thought and design.
How do we do this?
We bring together practice, theory and a variety of lived experience from different geographies to inform the solutions we offer. We do: a) Interdisciplinary research solutions b) Develop strategy for behaviour change communication c) Develop products and processes (films, design, writing and workshops) in the fields of education, gender, energy, water, waste management and public health; the aspect of climate change underlies all of it

The firm has so far worked with a range of international and national agencies, research institutions and implementation bodies, including the ACPET, UNHCR, NRDC, ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL, SUSTAINABILITY ATELIER, GIZ, J-PAL, TERI, TERI SAS, CREA and CEE among others.
The Team
Swaja Saransh
Swaja Saransh is a communication specialist and a filmmaker based in Delhi with a background in economics and journalism. They have worked on live-action films as well as animation- producing shorts, documentaries and fiction dealing with education, migration, sanitation and public health, rural livelihoods, energy transitions and climate change. Their films have been nominated and awarded at various national and international film festivals (MIFF 2016; CMS VATAVARAN 2014).
They have been a member of the ESD ExpertNet, a trans-national (India, Germany, Mexico and South Africa) network of experts that enhances the implementation of ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) in the network countries.
They have been a Managing Global Governance Fellow(2021) at the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS), GIZ Education for Sustainable Development Scholar for the year 2012-13 and a BIARI (Brown Institute for Advanced Research Institutes) Scholar for 2016. Currently they are a Media Fellow at the University of Essex(UK) for the year 2024-25.
Abhishek Anupam
Abhishek Anupam is a photographer and cinematographer based in Mumbai. Initial years of his practice were motivated by questions about the medium of photography and in recent years, his research interests have moved towards societal questions of representation and identity, climate change, and sustainable development practices.
He holds an MA in Photography from University for the Creative Arts, UK and his work has been exhibited at Focus Photography Festival, Zandra Rhodes Gallery and Chennai Photo Biennale. His commercial practice includes work produced for Google, Decathlon Sports, Billboard, Hiranandani and Treebo Hotels. He also volunteers his time as a photo editor for Decenter Magazine, an online cultural and political magazine that aims to amplify voices and critiques from the margins.

Shishir Basant
Dr. Shishir Basant is a hydrologist with several years of experience of working with land managers, local agencies and social enterprises. He got his PhD from Texas A&M University under Dr. Bradford Wilcox where he worked on multiple projects to understand the linkages between restoration and groundwater recharge. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Nevada, Reno where his work is focused on the changes in hydrology and vegetation following wildfires. Over the course of his academic journey, Shishir has frequently interacted with and advised land owners, wildlife refuge managers on forest and water management. In addition, he has mentored and trained multiple undergraduate and master’s students. He has also published and been a part of some high-impact publications relevant to restoration practices and hydrology.
Prior to embarking on his academic journey, Shishir got his Bachelors in Mechanical engineering from VNIT, Nagpur, after which he worked in the energy and development sectors for 5 years. Shishir is interested in advancing hydrological science, public outreach, and guiding policies for a better environment.
Ericka Toledo Zurita
Ericka Toledo Zurita is the head of projects at the Water Centre at Technological Institute of Monterrey. She is an ESD( Education for Sustainable Development) educator and an environmental and global governance expert who has chaired multiple international cooperation initiatives between Mexico and Germany. Ericka is a DAAD scholar who finished her Masters in Environmental Governance from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany. She is an alumni of the GIZ-ESD Expertnet ( 2012-13), Brown international Advanced Research Institute (2017), and Managing Global Governance (MGG, 2020) from German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS).
Mansi Sharma
Mansi Sharma is an education developer and trainer working at the Department of Education Policy at Ghent University. She currently develops interactive onsite and digital learning material around marquee themes such as challenge-based education, diversity, and multiculturalism for the ENLIGHT European university network. As part of the ENLIGHT’s ‘Teaching and Learning Lab’, she also documents the network’s educational best practices for wider dissemination. In 2022, in collaboration with colleagues from ENLIGHT’s “educational taskforce”, she worked on synchronous and asynchronous challenge-based education trainings.As part of her responsibilities with the department of education policy, she takes newly appointed professorial staff through learning tracks mandated by the University’s professionalisation initiatives. A journalist (Delhi University, India) and educational researcher (KU, Leuven, Belgium) by training, her other academic and professional interests include education for sustainable development, life-skills & career education, and international cooperation.
Krishna Daksh
Krishna Daksh is a graphic designer, animator and video editor with a Bachelors in Video Film Design from Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune. In a short span of five years, he has designed films, animations and graphic campaigns for a number of international clients, government organisations and agencies. He has a love for poetry, travel, cinema and storytelling in all forms.
Bhashwati Sengupta
Bhaswati Sengupta is a Development and Education Consultant. A larger part of her work has been in the area of planning and executing education initiatives by various kinds of development and research organisations including Mahila Samakhya, Action Aid, Timbaktu Collective and projects with the World Bank. She has over three decades of experience in working with youth at risk from marginal communities on communication, creative and critical skills- aspects of which may be seen under the lens of Social and Emotional Learning today. She has conducted interactive communication workshops with Agriculture Scientists and Food Security activists in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
As Co-Director of Hyderabad Urban Lab, she is in charge of mentoring interns and researchers, preparing interactive learning material for communities and designing curriculum for trainings and other learning programme for multiple learner groups which include mid level officials and community workers. She also translates research studies into easily comprehensible audio and visual material.
Manu Moudgil
Manu Moudgil is an independent journalist and researcher for last 17 years with focus on environment, social justice and governance. He has travelled extensively and reported from 10 of the 15 major agro-climatic zones of India. In 2011, he founded GOI Monitor, a web magazine on policy issues and sustainable development. He has done research work with Govt of India, The Media Foundation, Foundation for Ecological Security and India Rivers’ Forum besides volunteering with several non-profit organisations working in the fields as varied as natural farming, transparency in governance, disability rights and mental health. He has also been training journalists and media students on data and multimedia journalism, right to information and climate crisis. Manu has been awarded several fellowships including the Govt of India’s Right To Information Fellowship 2012, TDU-Nature India Biodiversity Fellowship 2017, Water Aid Fellowship 2019, Bhoomi Senior Fellowship 2020 besides the CMS Vatavaran Young Environment Journalist Award in 2015. He has done masters in mass communication, a short diploma on environmental law from WWF-India and IGNOU and a certificate course on field botany from BNHS.
Our Work (Communications)
Our work in the domain of communications comprises of both- strategy and design. We have the experience of putting together a communication strategy for long and short term projects as well as organisations. In the domain of communication design, we have executed films (animation and live-action), graphic design, written and illustrated content and media literacy and storytelling workshops.
